Philip Evans

Biography

Philip Evans is acclaimed for his insights into how technology shapes business strategy and policy. His vast expertise encompasses such topics as artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, community-centric marketing, the deconstruction of value chains, digital disruption, infrastructure economics, net neutrality, network-based strategy (in commercial and military contexts), open collaboration and innovation, privacy, security, and user-generated content.

Evans has keynoted conferences convened by Bill Gates, Michael Milken, The Economist, and the World Economic Forum (Davos). He has also addressed closed-door sessions of the world’s telecom regulators in Geneva, privacy authorities in Uruguay, and the cabinet-level Senior Executive Council of the Pentagon. His TED talk, How Data will Transform Business, has been viewed more than 1 million times.

Philip is a senior advisor at BCG and a BCG Fellow. A former senior partner and managing director, he founded BCG’s media and internet practice areas and pioneered the firm’s work in advanced analytical methods, intellectual property, network analysis, and pricing. He was dubbed one of the “Lords of Strategy” by Walter Kiechel in his book of that name. In Philip’s 35-year career at BCG, he has consulted worldwide on strategy in the consumer goods, financial services, health care, media, retail, and technology industries. He has also advised governments on military organization, homeland security, economic development, and digital policy.

Philip is coauthor of Blown to Bits: How the New Economics of Information Transforms Strategy, a bestselling book on technology and strategy. He has written numerous articles for the Harvard Business Review, and won the Review’s McKinsey prize.  He sits on the Advisory Board of the Oxford Internet Institute and the British-North American Committee. He graduated #1 in economics from Cambridge University with double first-class honors, and was a Harkness Fellow at Harvard University. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School.
